Color with the volume down.

The materials of a Mexican table are the best ones on this coast: terracotta, amber glass, clay gourds, marigold, magenta, raw wood. What usually happens to them is that everything lands on the table at once — five colors, three patterns, nothing chosen. Loud from across the room, thin when you sit down at it.

I use the same vocabulary and take things out. One palette instead of five. The same clay vessel repeating down the length of the table. Wood left bare where a cloth would normally go. Marigold placed, not scattered. It still reads as Mexican from the doorway; it just holds up when you're close enough to touch it.

For couples who want the day to look like Mexico, and look decided.
